Annapurna Base Camp Trek Weather
Annapurna Base Camp Trek Weather
Weather makes or breaks this trek. The Annapurna Base Camp trek sits at 4,130 meters, and conditions change fast up there. Before you book, you need a clear picture of what each season actually feels like on the trail.
Spring (March to May): The Most Popular Window
Spring is the sweet spot. Temperatures are comfortable, skies tend to stay clear in the morning, and the rhododendron forests bloom red and pink along the lower trail. Expect:
- Daytime temperatures between 10°C and 20°C at lower elevations
- Near 0°C or below at base camp, especially at night
- Some afternoon clouds and light rain as May approaches
- Good trail visibility most mornings
Monsoon (June to August): Possible, But Challenging
Rain arrives in June and sticks around until late August. The trails get slippery, leeches are everywhere below 2,500 meters, and mountain views disappear behind clouds for days at a time. Some trekkers still go. The forest is lush, and the trails are quiet. But it takes patience and the right gear.
Autumn (September to November): Peak Season for Good Reason
After the monsoon, the air clears up fast. October is many trekkers' favorite month. The skies are sharp blue, Annapurna and Machapuchare look impossibly close, and temperatures drop gradually as you gain altitude.
- Expect daytime highs of 15°C to 22°C in lower sections
- Base camp nights can drop to minus 10°C in November
- Trails are busy, especially around Chhomrong and Deurali
Winter (December to February): Cold and Quiet
Snow closes the upper sections most winters. The Annapurna Sanctuary can become impassable. That said, December starts mildly, and some trekkers complete it before the snowfall gets serious. January and February are for experienced cold-weather trekkers only.
What Gear to Pack for the Weather
Whatever season you pick, layers are non-negotiable.
Here's a practical list:
- Waterproof jacket and pants (monsoon and afternoon showers)
- Insulated down jacket for high camp nights
- Moisture-wicking base layers
- Trekking poles for slippery trail sections
- Warm sleeping bag rated to at least minus 10°C
- Sun hat and UV sunglasses (UV exposure increases with altitude)
